Servicing

It’s recommended that you get your car serviced every 10,000 miles or every year. A service is a comprehensive look at your vehicle.

We work through component checks, part replacements, fluid level inspections and can identify potential issues.

Services aren’t compulsorily but they’re a great way to ensure your car is working as it should. If you maintain your vehicle regularly, you’ll less likely have any large repair bills in the future. You’ll also keep your manufacturer’s warranty in date and your vehicle will be more valuable when you come to sell it if you have a full service history.

During a service we’ll look at things like your brakes, tyres and key elements under the bonnet to keep your car running smoothly. If you don’t feel like your vehicle needs a full service, we can do a mini service where we’ll do the basic checks above and beyond what an MOT covers.

MOT’s

MOT Testing is primarily about your safety. A tester will go through different elements of your vehicle and check that they work as they should on an annual basis.

MOT Testing your car can happen while you wait. An MOT Test takes around 45 minutes and our tester will be able to let you know whether your vehicle has passed or failed straight away. If it hasn’t passed we’ll work with you to get the issues solved as quickly as possible so you’re back on the road in no time!

Sometimes a vehicle has passed but there may be some advisories. These are things that will need to be thought about at some point in the future. We can get these items resolved for you straight away or you can wait until a time to suit you.

Our MOT system talks to the DVSA (Driving Vehicle Standards Agency). So everything is logged in a central place. Our testers are all trained and regularly keep on top of their skills with new training and assessments.

You can check the Government website for when you’re next due an MOT, or else you can opt into our yearly MOT reminder service. We’ll get in touch before your MOT Test is due and you’ll be able to book online or on the phone at a time to suit you.

We have three trained MOT testers, Ben, Danny and Nick. Any one of our team might be working on your car and they’ll be your point of contact throughout the process.

Professional Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaning

Keep your diesel running clean and powerful with professional DPF cleaning from Somerset Automotive.

At Somerset Automotive, we specialise in advanced Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) cleaning, a service that very few independent garages in Somerset currently offer. If your diesel is losing power, using more fuel or showing DPF warning lights, a proper clean could save you from an expensive replacement.

What is a DPF and why does it matter?

Your DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) sits in your exhaust system and is designed to catch and store soot from the engine. Over time this filter fills up. If it’s not able to regenerate (self‑clean) properly, the DPF becomes blocked.

A Blocked DPF Can Lead To

  • Loss of power and poor acceleration
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Warning lights and limp‑mode
  • MOT emissions failures
  • Potential damage to your engine and turbo if ignored

What is DPF Cleaning?

DPF cleaning is a controlled process that removes the soot and ash trapped inside the filter without needing to replace the unit!

How does DPF Cleaning Work?

Regular, professional cleaning restores the DPF’s capacity to trap soot, helping your engine breathe properly again and keeping emissions within legal limits

The result is a clean, free flowing DPF, improved performance and a much lower risk of future warning lights and breakdowns.

At Somerset Automotive we:

  • Diagnose the problem and check for any underlying issues
  • Use specialist equipment and cleaning solutions designed for DPFs
  • Flush out soot and ash build‑up from the filter channels
  • Reset related fault codes and run checks to confirm correct operation

Driving with a blocked DPF can cause high exhaust temperatures and back‑pressure, putting extra strain on the turbo and engine. Cleaning the filter helps reduce this risk and keeps repair bills down.

Lower Emmissions, Better MPG

Advanced Driver Assistance System

The best vehicle technicians need the best technology.

That’s why we’ve invested in new digital tools to enhance our service offering. This also allows us to be one of the leading garages in Somerset when it comes to specialist diagnostics.

Our Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technology is industry leading in terms of its capability. Very few garages in Somerset can offer this service. Our trained technician Charlie is one of the very few throughout the country who has the qualification, skill and knowledge to work on ADAS technology within a vehicle.

So, what is ADAS? Many new vehicles now have technology such as lane assist, forward collision warning and automatic braking. These systems rely on hundreds of tiny sensors to work. All new cars will have the sensors set to factory settings. Over time these sensors can come out of alignment, but you may not know that it has occurred. Calibration of your cars system can ensure that the sensors work as they should and your vehicle is operating affectively. Not just anyone can work on calibrating this technology. Technicians will go through an intensive course to ensure they’re qualified for maintaining this vehicle technology.

Four-wheel Alignment

Four-wheel alignment is an important part of vehicle maintenance.

It helps to maintain even tread wear meaning your tyres will last for longer. Handling will also be improved when your wheels are correctly aligned.

If your vehicle needs four-wheel alignment you may notice unevenly worn tyres, wobbly steering or steering that pulls to one side. Potholes or hitting a kerb can all contribute to misalignment. We have the latest technology to realign wheels which will save you money in the long run both on maintenance and tyres.

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning gas will need replacing periodically in your vehicle.

While we re-gas we’re legally obliged to check for any leaks or faults. We can also do a more in depth service of your system at the time, which we’d recommend every couple of years. Like any component of your vehicle it needs regular servicing. You may notice that you need your system to be re-gassed when you don’t notice much of a difference between it being on or off or the temperature is inconsistent.

Brakes

Brake servicing is an essential part of vehicle maintenance to ensure your brakes are working properly and can stop your vehicle safely.

Ensuring that your brakes are working correctly is one of the most important parts of a service. Removing the wheels, testing them and checking the brake fluid is a key part of the maintenance. This work can be done without a service and we can do a brake test inspection for you at any point between services and MOT’s.

Vehicles have brake pads, hoses, discs (or shoes), callipers and handbrake linkages, all of which can degrade over time but can be identified with a simple check up.

There are several things within the engine that can cause an issue including metal shavings in the oil resulting from wear from the cylinder head valves or oil leaks.

If your cambelt fails, it can quickly lead to other problems so it’s advisable to get it resolved quickly. Your vehicle manufacturer will have advice on how often it should be replaced but on average it will be every five years or between 50,000 and 75,000 miles.
